Securing America’s Digital Borders Is an Economic Imperative

The Artificial Intelligence race is the most important race our nation will ever run to ensure our economy prospers, our national defense is secure, and our democracy is preserved. Yet every nanosecond of every day, our digital borders are being overrun by foreign adversaries. Investing the human and financial capital to secure these borders is just as urgent and critical to our future as protecting and strengthening our physical borders.

The United States has a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $29 trillion annually, making it the strongest economy on Earth. Right behind us is China, with a GDP of $18 trillion. But if the cost of cybercrime were ranked as an economy, it would account for a staggering $9.5 trillion annually, effectively making it the third-largest economy in the world. These attacks are a direct assault on our economic lifeblood and our geopolitical power – and adversaries like China and Russia, along with rogue hackers, are constantly exploiting our vulnerabilities and seeking to gain the upper hand in both cybercrime and Artificial Intelligence.

The recent emergence of China’s DeepSeek AI is a wake-up call that rattled the stock market and Silicon Valley. This success is commendable but also replicable by US firms.  But it is alarming, because it reflects how rapidly our adversaries are advancing in AI and reinforces the urgent need for America to innovate faster and defend smarter. We must simultaneously lead the AI revolution while erecting robust cyber defenses.

Properly implemented, AI has the potential to turbocharge the U.S. economy, creating new industries, enhancing productivity, and reinforcing our status as the global leader. This isn’t just an opportunity — it’s a necessity. AI, combined with robust cybersecurity, can usher in the next 200 years of American prosperity. But without defending our digital borders, these gains will be siphoned away by adversaries who exploit the openness of our systems and our society.

The concept of digital borders may seem abstract, but their significance is far from theoretical. Imagine every federal, state, municipal, and business organization in the United States as part of a vast, interconnected web that drives our lives and our $29 trillion GDP. This digital ecosystem powers everything from electricity grids and air traffic control operations to financial systems and hospitals. Yet, like a house with no locks, this vital network remains alarmingly vulnerable to cyberattacks from adversaries seeking to exploit its weaknesses.

Cybersecurity is our digital wall—the first and last line of defense against relentless cyberattacks. AI and cybersecurity tools must not only build and patrol this wall but also relentlessly scan for hidden threats already working within, waiting to strike. Yet, our defenses remain dangerously incomplete. Cybersecurity solutions are prohibitively expensive, and a massive talent shortage leaves critical gaps in our frontline. Currently, there are 1,000,000+ job openings for cybersecurity professionals in the United States, leaving our digital borders exposed to hostile actors. Without these cyber soldiers, we are fighting a 21st-century war with 20th-century defenses—and the enemy is already inside the gates.

Tampa Bay is working to address this challenge. The region is rapidly evolving into “Cyber Bay”, a national hub for cybersecurity innovation. Anchored by MacDill Air Force Base—home to U.S. Central Command and Special Operations Command—along with Cyber Florida at USF, the region boasts a deep pool of cybersecurity talent across military, academic, and private sectors. A thriving business community is driving affordable cybersecurity solutions while advancing research and workforce development.

The stakes could not be higher. If the U.S. fails to defend its digital borders, we risk losing not just our economic edge, but our ability to innovate, our global influence, and perhaps even our democracy. This is not a distant threat—it’s an active war, fought in nanoseconds, on every server, every network, every day. But America has always risen to meet its greatest challenges. By investing in AI, fortifying cybersecurity, and leveraging the full strength of our military, academic, and business sectors, we can lead the world into a future that is secure, innovative, and undeniably American.
